YJCGUEST: Maritza Galvez, Youth Justice Coalition

Starting tonight, California’s grassroots juvenile justice organization, Youth Justice Coalition, will be taking bus-loads of activists from Los Angeles to Sacramento to begin a Beyond Prisons day statewide campaign for progressive reforms in the juvenile justice system. They also plan to challenge Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger’s plans to expand California prisons. As part of the YJC’s “Smack down on Sac town,” as they call it, activists will rally at the state capitol on Wednesday, March 28th to demand the shut down of youth prisons, an amendment to the three strikes law and the end of juvenile “life without parole” sentences. Beyond Prisons day is being sponsored by various activist organizations including the Youth Justice Coalition, as well as Critical Resistance, and Families to Amend California’s Three Strikes.

Buses to Sacramento leave tonight, Tuesday March 27th at 9 pm. Call the Youth Justice Coalition for details at 323-235-4243. YJC’s website is at www.youth4justice.org.
