the end of povertyIn it’s annual corruption report, Transparency International revealed that Afghanistan and Iraq, the two countries most recently occupied by the US, also suffer from among the worst levels of corruption. Iraq and Afghanistan are also recipients of billions of dollars in aid, while ordinary Afghans and Iraqis suffer from rampant poverty. Meanwhile, on a global scale, the majority of people are mired in poverty, with only 20% of the world’s population consuming 80% of its resources. The End of Poverty, a documentary by Phillipe Diaz makes the case that global poverty is not an accident. That it is in fact a predictable consequence of military conquest, slavery, and colonization. The End of Poverty takes viewers from the slums of Africa to the barrios of Latin America, and features interviews with award-winning economists like Amartya Sen and Joseph Stiglitz. It has been screened at over 25 international film festivals, and opens in theaters next week. But listeners can get a sneak preview tonight at the Laemmle Sunset 5.
