sexuality and socialismThe District of Columbia Council is poised to vote on a motion to legalize same-sex marriage this week. Ten of the thirteen council members are sponsoring the bill, which would allow LGBT couples to marry in Washington DC. While victories and defeats over gay marriage continue across the US, one thing is certain, Americans are far more open to the concept now than they were a few decades ago. Much has changed in the way we perceive homosexuality. Popular television shows showcase openly gay and lesbian characters, there are more openly gay elected officials and public perceptions about the LGBT community have dramatically shifted in the positive direction. Much of the public transformation can be traced back to the early days of sexual liberation movements and the hard work of LGBT activists, according to writer Sherry Wolf. In her new book, Sexuality and Socialism: History, Politics and Theory of LGBT Liberation, Wolf details the history of radical left and Socialist activism that helped bring LGBT issues to the forefront, and connect them with other forms of oppression.
