Cultural Destruction of Iraq

| the entire program

Iraq National MuseumGUEST: Prof. Ihsan Fethi, Dean College of Arts, University of Amman, Jordan

In addition to being the site of one of today’s worst wars and centers of conflict, Iraq is also known as the “cradle of civilization.” Present-day Iraq occupies the greater part of the ancient land of Mesopotamia, the plain between Euphrates and Tigris rivers. Some of the world’s greatest ancient civilizations were developed in this area, leaving behind a treasure trove of artifacts that relate Iraq’s cultural history. As the US prepared to invade Iraq in March 2003, curators and historians around the world appealed to the US to protect hisoric sites. However, as Saddam Hussein’s government was toppled, US troops did nothing to prevent the looting of Iraq’s national museum and it’s collection of artifacts dating back 10,000 years. Three White House cultural advisers even resigned in protest and one Fox News engineer was charged with smuggling paintings into the US.

Prof. Fethi will highlight the destruction & looting of the cultural heritage of Iraq by pre & post-US invasion and occupation. Slide Show & Talk on Destruction of Iraq presented by the Museum of Contemporary Arab Art

    Very important information and segment.
The lootings were a shameful event; and a harbringer of things to come.
I hope the lecture of Dr. Fethi is well attended!
Thank you “Uprising” for producing and airing this important segment.
