Jesus Camp is a documentary released late last year by film makers Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady that looks into the often disturbing world of evangelical indoctrination of children in middle America. On Uprising we interviewed the two film makers and since then, Jesus Camp has won more awards and been nominated for best documentary at this year’s Academy Awards. With incredible access to a right wing Christian community, Ewing and Grady follow three children, Levi, Rachel, and Tory as they head to a Bible summer camp called “Kids on Fire.†Becky Fisher, a children’s pastor who runs the camp is unabashed about the indoctrination of young children who she hopes will grow up to continue a right wing legacy in the US and win the so-called culture war. From overturning abortion, to supporting President Bush and the state of Israel, to debunking the science of global warming and evolution, Jesus Camp is a wake up call to anyone who underestimates the political power of the Christian right.
American Fascists – BOOK – $100
American Fascists talk + interview – $30
Chris Hedges, veteran journalist and author, has just released his newest book, on the dangers of the Christian right in the United States. The book is called “American Fascists: The Christian Right and the War on America†and you may recall we had an in-depth interview with Chris Hedges about his book on Uprising very recently. In American Fascists, Hedges sounds the alarm on the dangers of the Christian right and explains how it embodies most aspects of traditional fascist movements. Most frighteningly, this movement has serious political power and a strong popular base. Hedges points to the hundreds of senators and members of Congress who have earned between 80 and 100 percent approval ratings from the three most influential Christian Right advocacy groups as one of many signs that the movement is burrowing deep inside the US government to subvert it. In researching American Fascists, Hedges attended various seminars and workshops by leaders of the Christian Right, and interviewed several people who were or still are part of the movement. I spoke with Chris Hedges in studio yesterday and began by asking him to describe his background in Christianity.
