Mujeres de Maiz Kicks off Month-Long Series of Events
Marking International Women’s Day this year in Southern California, the women of Mujeres de Maiz, an inter-generational group of Chicana/Latina artists, will hold their annual arts and cultural festival. Originally founded by local artists and activists, Felicia Montes and Claudia Mercado, Mujeres de Maiz began as a one-night exhibit and performance event but due to its popularity quickly evolved into something much larger. Now, each year in March, women’s history month, a series of events mark the art, culture, and resistance of women in Southern California. This year’s events begins on Sunday March 7th with women’s performances, an exhibit, and a marketplace, as well as a live art show featuring novelist and playwright Josefina Lopez, Martha Gonzalez of Quetzal, the band La Santa Cecelia, and acclaimed Afro-Peruvian singer Susana Baca. The art show also features my guest Claudia “Cava” Gonzalez.
GUESTS: Maritza Alvarez, organizer with Mujeres de Maiz, and Claudia “Cava” Gonzalez, performer and musician.
Visit www.mujeresdemaiz.com for more information and a detailed line up of all the events.
