Unsung Heroes in LA Take on Housing, Education
The Liberty Hill Foundation has announced its first annual spotlight on the unsung grassroots heroes of Los Angeles for 2010. Selecting six activists who are emerging community organizers, the foundation chose those who are on the frontlines of some of the most pressing issues facing the city such as education, labor, marriage equality and housing. The inaugural honorees for this year are Sentayehu Silassie, Hamid Khan, Reverend Eric Lee, Maria Brenes, Chris Gabriele and Amy Schur. Liberty Hill’s CEO Kafi D. Blumefield described the six leaders as “smart, strategic, resilient, and tireless.” The foundation hopes that shining the spotlight on their efforts will raise awareness of the challenges that are most pressing in Los Angeles while inspiring the best ways to organize around them. Joining us on the program this morning are two of the six unsung grassroots heroes, Maria Brenes and Chris Gabriele
