Darfur’s Horrors Spilling Over Into Chad
| the entire program
GUEST: David Lynn, independent journalist, just returned from Chad
Last week the International Criminal Court made its first move on Darfur, Sudan, in response to the on-going genocide. The Court accused a Sudanese minister and a militia commander of war crimes. As expected, the Sudanese government refused to co-operate. Meanwhile the African Union’s peacekeeping mission in Darfur was attacked over this past weekend in an on-going bid by government supported rebels to endanger aid to displaced Sudanese. Today we focus on the plight of Darfur’s refugees in neighboring Chad. One third of Darfur’s population has been displaced by war, leaving many reliant on aid organizations. Janjaweed militias have crossed over the border to Chad and joined with rebels there, spilling the violence over a larger area.
While in Chad this February, journalist David Lynn spoke with a number of refugees, UN officials, and others:
– Interview with Abukar Ahmad Abbkar in the D’Jabal Darfur Refugee camp in Chad on February 20th.
– Interview with actor and activist, Mia Farrow who was in Chad documenting the refugee crisis on February 22nd.
