Taxing California’s Big Oil to Fund Public Higher Education
As California’s institutions of higher education reel from steep budget cuts, a new bill, AB 656, seeks to restore funding through an extraction fee on big oil. Sponsored by Assembly Member and Democratic Attorney General Candidate Alberto Torrico, the “Fair Share for Fair Tuition” bill proposes that a 12.5% extraction fee be placed on oil corporations operating in the state. Money generated from the measure would raise an estimated two billion dollars per year for the UC, Cal State University and Community College systems. The Assembly Bill currently enjoys the support of broad organizations such as the Courage Campaign, the California Teacher’s Association, and the Service Employees International union. In an effort to further highlight “Fair Share for Fair Tuition,” Torrico will join students, teachers and community supporters tomorrow in a rally at Ken Malloy Harbor Regional Park.
