One Year Since Historic Immigrant March
| the entire program
GUESTS: Jorge-Mario Cabrera, CARECEN spokesperson for the Committee for Justice for all Families, Nativo Lopez, National President of Hermandad Mexicana and President of the Mexican American Political Association
Congress will be considering a broad bi-partisan bill on immigration that will create a new guest-worker program, stiffen worker verification procedures and overhaul the visa system to reduce waiting times for documented immigrants. The bill also contains provisions designed to appeal to conservatives who want stronger border enforcement and oppose citizenship provisions that grant amnesty to people in the country without documents. Meanwhile, this Sunday is the first anniversary of the first of several historic immigrant marches that took place in Los Angeles in 2006. Between half a million to one million mostly immigrant Latino families wearing white, assembled peacefully in downtown Los Angeles. They were united in denouncing House Resolution 4437, better known as the Sensenbrenner bill which criminalized immigrants. But there were wide calls for human rights and amnesty. City officials said it was the largest demonstration they have ever seen.
The Mexican American Political Association website is online at www.mapa.org.
