KPFK Fund Drive – Day 23
Listen to the entire program
White Power USA
President Obama is delivering a major address this morning calling for comprehensive immigration legislation and border security. His administration has openly criticized the recent draconian immigration law in Arizona, known as SB 1070 which would criminalize undocumented immigrants and promote racial profiling. Officials in Arizona are releasing new documents today to all of the state’s police agencies on how to detain people and ask for their immigration status. Immigration has become a flashpoint particularly in border states like Arizona where mostly-white vigilante groups have set up informal border patrols. Many such groups are linked to racist right-wing hate groups that oppose racial integration. In fact, the author of SB 1070, Arizona state senator, Republican Russell Pearce, is a close associate of well known neo-Nazi Jason J.T. Ready. Since the election of President Barack Obama, the number of white militias has risen sharply from 170 to more than 500 according to the Southern Poverty Law Center. Obama himself has been the target of an unprecedented number of death threats, about 30 a day – 4 times the number against his predecessor, Bush. The so-called Tea Party movement has organized rallies across the country attended by people openly declaring they are armed and calling for an overthrow of the government. Many of the extremist right-wing groups in the country boast covert support from elected officials, most likely Republicans. The association of former Republican Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin with the Tea Party draws a less-than-tenuous line between the GOP, the Tea Party conservatives, right wing militias, and neo-Nazi groups. With the amplification readily provided by Fox News, right wing extremism has greater influence on the nation as a whole than many Americans realize.
