Using Film to Promote Non-Violence in the Middle East
| the entire program
GUEST: Palestinian Film maker Hanna Elias
Last Wednesday, tens of thousands of Palestinian government workers staged a one-day strike demanding their full wages be paid by the newly established unity government. Union officials cautioned that the demonstration was merely a warning and that should their demands go unheeded, a full on strike would follow. Earlier in the week, hundreds of Palestinian school teachers also staged a one day strike to demand full wages in addition to back pay. The inability of the unity government to pay full wages to workers is just one of the many challenges it faces since forming two months ago. According to Finance Minister Salem Fayyad only half of worker’s wages could be paid out as a Western embargo on aid remains intact. Meanwhile, the six-month old Gaza ceasefire has been made fragile as of late by Israeli air strikes and Palestinian rocket fire.
