A little over a year after the brutal police attack on the Mexican town of San Salvador Atenco, three activist leaders have been sentenced to 67 years in prison. The three men Ignacio Del Valle, Felipe Alvarez, and Hector Galindo, are leaders of the People’s Front in Defense of the Land (FPDT). A little over a year ago, Mexican police raided Atenco and arrested over 200 farmworkers and activists, many of whom were tortured at the hands of law enforcement. At least 23 women reported being raped or sexually assaulted while in police custody. No police officer has been charged. Zapatista Subcommandante Marcos and Commandanta Hortensia of the Other Campaign led a march in protest of the excessive sentences of the Atenco activists.
