V-mapGUESTS: Huong Hoang, project coordinator, and Julio Diaz, Angel Tovar, high school students from South LA

As part of the Southern California Library’s V-Map project, youth from ten South Los Angeles area High Schools will lead walking tours of the Vermont corridor neighborhood. The tours, which are open to the public, will connect the history of that community to the conditions of the present day. Through the V-Map neighborhood mapping project, young people were trained to research their community’s history through the resources of the Southern California Library. Youths leading the tours will offer their analysis and solutions to issues that affect their community such as economic conditions and transportation. The tours are approximately a mile in length, and will highlight historical landmarks and cultural institutions. It is hoped that the tours will showcase another side of South Los Angeles, in the voice of community youth themselves.
