KPFK Fund Drive Day 1
obama syndromeA bomb damaged a NATO oil tanker en route from Pakistan to Afghanistan yesterday. It was the fifth such attach in six days. The Pakistani Taliban, Tehreek-e-Taliban, have claimed responsibility for most of the attacks, which came on the heels of the Pakistani government closing off a major supply route used by the US and NATO in it’s Afghan war effort. The border crossing was closed after a US helicopter attack killed three Pakistani soldiers. The US says it regrets the deaths and is conducting a joint investigation with the Pakistani government. The Taliban’s attacks on NATO tankers carrying fuel for troops however, is apparently in response to US drone strikes. The US does not openly acknowledge its use of unmanned aerial vehicles that drop bombs in the border region between Pakistan and Afghanistan. While the drone attacks were begun during President Bush’s tenure, under President Obama reliance on drones to remotely drop bombs has risen dramatically.

Today we spend the hour with Pakistani born activist, writer, novelist, and orator Tariq Ali. His brand new book is called The Obama Syndrome: Surrender at Home, War Abroad. Tariq Ali is a writer and filmmaker. He has written more than a dozen books on world history and politics—including Pirates of the Caribbean, Bush in Babylon, and Clash of Fundamentalisms —as well as five novels in his Islam Quintet series and scripts for the stage and screen. He is an editor of the New Left Review and lives in London.

Bob Hoover, writing for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette said “The Obama Syndrome will be a powerful boost to Obama dissenters on the left.”
