Corbin HarneyGUESTS: Julie Ann Fishel, Western Shoshone Defense Project, Steve Lopez, Fort Mojave Indian Tribe

Corbin Harney, an anti-nuclear weapons activist and spiritual leader of the Western Shoshone Nation, died earlier this week at the age of 87. Harney was a well known spokesperson who traveled the globe educating people about the dangers of nuclear weapons and the effects of their proliferation on the environment. He addressed the United Nations in Geneva, Switzerland. The Western Shoshone homeland, which spans five states including California, is where the U.S. government tested and exploded nuclear bombs. Corbin opposed the dumping of radioactive waste on indigenous lands, and its degradation of the environment and people. As someone who helped bridge indigenous peoples and environmental groups, Harney received numerous national and international awards. Harney also authored two books during his lifetime, “The Way It Is: One Water, One Air, One Earth,” and the forthcoming “The Nature Way.” He was prominently featured in the recent documentary, “Trespassing,” which examines nuclear dumping on indigenous lands among other issues.
