GUEST: Tom Hayden, Author of “Ending the War in Iraq”

Tom Hayden was a founding member of the Students for a Democratic Society, or “SDS,” and in 1962 helped author its visionary call, the Port Huron Statement. Throughout the sixties, he participated in civil rights work in the South as well as in the black community of Newark. In the late sixties he shifted his focus to ending the Vietnam War, making two trips to North Vietnam, and was one of the “Chicago Eight”
protesters during the 1968 Democratic Convention.

Hayden was elected to the California State Assembly in 1982, and to the State Senate 10 years later, serving 18 years in all.

Following the 1992 Los Angeles riots, Hayden spent about 10 years interviewing gang members, former gang members, and others in exploring reasons, solutions, and the correlation between immigration policies and the spread of violent gangs.

Tom Hayden’s many books include “Rebellion in Newark,” “Trial,” and “Street Wars, Gangs and the Future of Violence.” The title of his newest book and the subject of this talk is, “Ending the War in Iraq”, published June 2007.

Tom Hayden spoke in Pasadena, California on June, 30, 2007.
