President Bush yesterday called on Congress to adopt his a 2.77 trillion dollar budget for next year. The budget would boost spending for the so-called “war on terror” while cutting so-called discretionary programs that are popular social services such as Medicare, food stamps, and student loans. The Departments of Defense and Homeland Security appeared to be the big winners. Bush is also calling on Congress to make his tax cuts for the wealthy, permanent. Joshua Bolten, director of the White House Office of Management and Budget defended Bush’s plan at a news conference yesterday. The budget includes $3.5 billion in education cuts that include a limit on federally guaranteed student loans.

Sonali’s Subversive Thought for the Day:

“The truth is there is an ideological struggle between those who believe that the best way to grow the economy is to give more money to the wealthy, and [those] who believe that the wealthy will make more money if average people do better.” – believe it or not, that was former President Bill Clinton, under whom welfare benefits were slashed.
