Celebrating Black History: Martin Luther King Jr. On Non-Violence
As you all know the month of February each year is designated as Black History month, and over the course of its 60 years in existence, the Pacifica Radio of which KPFK is a part, has covered Black history like no other media outlet, often as history was unfolding. Pacifica covered the civil rights movement, as well as what came before and after it. With our contemporary coverage of the events in Egypt and the Middle East, we are continuing that tradition only by the generosity of listeners like you. In his speech on Friday hours after Egyptian dictator Hosni Mubarak resigned, President Barack Obama quoted Martin Luther King Jr. in comparing what was unfolding in the Middle East with the non-violent movements for rights here in the US and elsewhere in the world.
KPFK’s Winter funddrive has kicked off on Tuesday February 15th. We’re proud to offer PKFK’s listener sponsors an incredible and unique gift: a 4G USB memory stick loaded up with 30 hours of black history programming from the Pacifica Radio Archives, as well as 30 hours of Pacifica’s historic and current coverage of Egypt. The memory stick is available for a pledge of $150 at 818-985-5735 or at www.kpfk.org.
We want to know why you support KPFK. Tell us in the comments section below and we’ll read out the best responses on the air!
