The Right Hook – 02/23/11
The Right Hook, a weekly segment which covers the machinations of the right wing, from the Republican Party to the Tea Party Patriots, and beyond. By Chris Bennett
Last Spring, as the health care debate was underway, Tea Party rallyers shouted racial epithets at Democrats outside the Longworth Building. Tea Party leaders responded to criticism over the incident by saying that any unruliness was likely caused by liberal “agents provocateur” planted in the crowd. No evidence was found for that claim. But now, former Tea Party Express chairman Mark Williams has hatched a scheme to sabotage the pro-labor demonstrations in Wisconsin and other states. Over the weekend, Williams blogged about his intentions for a pro-labor event in Sacramento. Williams’ plan was to don his Service Employees International Union t-shirt, and bee-line for the nearest t.v. camera to hold aloft his “Screw the Taxpayer!” placard. His other sign was to read “you OWE me!” So, if you happen to attend a pro-democracy event any time soon, and somebody near you is just a little too enthusiastic, kindly point them the way to the nearest mainstream media camera, if you can find one, so we can all enjoy the performance. With the pro-labor protests in Wisconsin growing, you may wonder why Republican governor Scott Walker is being so stubborn in his fight to end collective bargaining rights for unions. Well, Governor Walker has a couple of effective corner-men. Yes, Charles and David Koch. Old pros at using their cash to cash in even more. Rick Ungar, writing for Forbes.com reports that the Koch’s gave a mere $43,000 to Walker’s campaign directly. But brother David gave $1 Million more to the Republican Governor’s Association. In turn, the RGA spent $5 Million to get Walker elected in the Badger state. And now, the Koch’s want their ROI, return-on-investment. Walker may indeed be clinging to a deal he made, but increasingly, it looks like he’s caught between the Almighty Dollar and something he is just now beginning to recognize: grass-roots democracy. The Pan-Arab uprisings have caught the world’s sole superpower flatfooted and preaching for “stability,” which sounds like the status quo of high food prices, no rights, and random police beatings. Right wing media have been uncharacteristically out of their usual lockstep when it comes to these democratically inspired uprisings. Fox News employs the Breaking News fear alert such as “Dow Drops More than 200 Points as Oil Prices Surge.” Glenn Beck is lost amid a sea of blackboards and flat screen t.v.’s as he teaches his last remaining audience member the obscure origins of his conspiracy theories.
More than half the members of the Texas House have co-authored a measure directing universities to allow concealed handguns on campuses. Associated Press’ Jim Vertuno writes that supporters of this legislation claim that allowing students and professors to arm themselves will deter Virginia Tech-style killing sprees. Says Sen. Jeff Wentworth R-San Antonio “It’s strictly a matter of self-defense.” The measure applies to those at least 21 years of age which leaves underclassmen and incoming freshmen sitting ducks in any cafeteria food fights or academic debates that get too heated. With Spring Break fast approaching and a plentiful amount of gun shows in Texas, it’s gonna be easier than ever to fight for your right to party.
