GUEST: Alanis Obomsawin, First Nations Documentary Filmmaker
In a new documentary called “Gene Boy Came Home”, acclaimed filmmaker Alanis Obomsawin turns her camera on the ugliness of war through the eyes of one survivor. When he was 15, Eugene Benedict left the Odanak reserve in Canada to find work in the United States. At 17, he accepted a dare, enlisted in the Marines and served a traumatic two years in Vietnam. The film captures his journey back home and captures the living history of an often untold story. Alanis Omobsawin has made more than 30 documentaries on issues affecting Aboriginal people over the past 40 years. Gene Boy Come Home will screen as part of this year’s National Geographic All Roads Film Festival in LA this Sunday.
