Deadliest Attack on AU Peacekeepers in Darfur

| the entire program

GUEST: Elizabeth Ross, Africa Program Director at Relief International

African Union teams continue to search today for the more than twenty peacekeeping troops missing following an attack on their camp in Darfur. Hundreds of armed men in 30 vehicles assaulted, looted and destroyed the Haskanita base in Sudan last Saturday night. Twelve African Union peacekeeping troops are confirmed dead making the attack the single most deadly since the AU force was deployed in 2004. Suleiman Jamous, an influential member of the Sudanese Liberation Army Unity faction, has said that if his rebel group was involved, it was a local decision. Jamous has since asked for the troops in the area to be withdrawn. The attack has garnered swift international condemnation and Nigeria, leaders of the mission, may reconsider its commitment to peacekeeping in Darfur.
