Marcy Winograd Ramps Up Third Run for Congress
Southern California Congresswoman Jane Harman, just months after winning reelection, decided earlier this year to step down from her seat representing the 36th District. Harman had faced a stiff battle from progressive antiwar Democrat Marcy Winograd, who took 41% of the vote in November. Now, Harman’s open seat has attracted a slew of candidates including several Republicans. The district is heavily Democratic however. Los Angeles Council woman Janice Hahn and California Secretary of State Debra Bowen have both decided to run. And, Marcy Winograd hopes her third time campaigning for the seat will be a charm. Governor Jerry Brown has set May 17th as the date for a special election to fill the seat. If no single candidate wins a majority, there will be a run-off between the top two vote-getters. Winograd has distinguished herself from the Democratic Party establishment by taking a strong stand against the U.S. wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as for justice for the Palestinian people. She is also the co-founder of the Los Angeles chapter of Progressive Democrats of America, and a teacher by profession.

Marcy Winograd has adhered to the principles learned from working under Cesar Chavez, whom you quoted in your “subversive thought for the day”. Thank you for giving Winograd a voice. She won’t back down, but she may even charm the opposition into seeing the needs of all of us.
I’m a supporter & resident of the 36th CD.
