High School Students Punished for Protesting War
GUEST:Jonathan Acevedo, Currently Serving a 10-Day Suspension and is being Threatened with Expulsion
High school students in Berwyn, Illinois face expulsion following an anti-war demonstration on school grounds last week. Some 70 students at Morton West High School participated in a sit-in protest against the Iraq war at the school’s cafeteria on the first of November: All Saints Day. As they moved to lock down the school, administrators and police asked that the non-violent and peaceful action be moved outside of the cafeteria. Demonstrators obliged after reassurances that they would face no serious consequence. Administrators have since suspended dozens of students, and many now face expulsion. At a press conference yesterday, parents voiced their outrage over disciplinary actions taken against the students, and some concerned parents may be considering legal action against the school district. A petition in support of the students has circulated and gained signatories from Cindy Sheehan as well as numerous teachers, students, and activists across the nation. The student’s supporters will be gathering tonight at the district board of education meeting to address the issue of the school administration’s punitive punishments.
