She Looks Just Like You: A Memoir of (Non-Biological Lesbian) Motherhood
A Louisiana House Committee rejected a proposed bill that would have allowed same-sex couples to adopt children in that state. While there now exists majority national public support of gay marriage rights, gay adoption is still an issue that most Americans are still warming to. This was the second time the bill was rejected. Currently in Louisiana, only one parent in a same-sex couple can be legally considered their child’s guardian. Navigating state laws around gay adoption in the country is complicated as there exist patchwork laws, state-by-state, and often even county-by-county. A new book about the experience of one woman’s journey toward parenthood explores from a personal angle, the terrain that heterosexual couples may take for granted. Amie Klempnauer Miller’s book, “She Looks Just Like You: A Memoir of (Non-Biological Lesbian) Motherhood, is considered a “much-needed cultural roadmap to what it means to become a parent.” Through artificial insemination, Miller’s long-term partner Jane, conceived and birthed their daughter Hannah, plunging both parents into what seemed like uncharted territory.

I enjoyed this interview, and I wish Amie and every other mother the best with raising her child/ren.
I have to question whether this trend towards assimilation is the best for lesbian culture. Do we really want to be exactly like het couples? Somehow, assimilation politics have won out over the struggle for radical liberation.
