Among the Truthers: A Journey Through America’s Growing Conspiracist Underground
The internet has been abuzz for some weeks now about a NASA coverup of a prediction that in 2012 the sun will erupt in a solar flare so dangerous, that it could destroy the Earth. While Solar astronomers have assured the public that our sun is a very stable star, incapable of generating a flare strong enough to engulf the earth, it has done little to assuage the online hysteria that such stories often generate. In fact, the internet has played a significant role in the past decade or so of helping to proliferate all manner of conspiracy theories about various incidents and events, chief among them the September 11th conspiracy, and the Obama birth certificate conspiracy. A new book by blogger and journalist Jonathan Kay, paints a complex, and deeply revealing portrait of today’s conspiracy movements, particularly the so-called “Truthers,” and “Birthers.” Jonathan Kay spent two years attending conventions, perusing chat rooms, websites, and Facebook groups, and interviewing key members of conspiracy movements. His book, “Among the Truthers: A Journey Through America’s Growing Conspiracist Underground,” makes the connection between the general distrust that a majority of Americans have of their government, and the real and documented crimes and coverups in history that provide fodder for conspiracies. Kay also takes issue with his own profession and the mainstream media’s failure to respond to accusations of pro-government bias. He approaches conspiracy theories connected to both ends of the political spectrum from his self-described position of political centrism.
GUEST: Jonathan Kay, author of Among the Truthers: A Journey Through America’s Growing Conspiracist Underground, managing editor, columnist, and blogger, at Canada’s National Post newspaper. His freelance articles have appeared in such publications as The New Yorker, the New York Times, Harpers Magazine, Commentary, Salon, Reader’s Digest, and Salon.
Sonali’s Subversive Thought for the Day
“The conspiracy community regularly seizes on one slip of the tongue, misunderstanding, or slight discrepancy to defeat 20 pieces of solid evidence; accepts one witness of theirs, even if he or she is a provable nut, as being far more credible than ten normal witnesses on the other side; treats rumors, even questions, as the equivalent of proof; leaps from the most minuscule of discoveries to the grandest of conclusions; and insists… that the failure to explain everything perfectly negates all that is explained.” – Vincent Bugliosi

this was a good interview and revelation on air and
yet many KPFKers are disturbed, of course, for calling them on their own narrow minded views and demands to only hear what they want to hear.
at a recent LSB meeting a public person male was ranting about how much he ‘hated’ this program and had already written complaints about it being aired.
While I attempted to say “it is free speech” right?
he insisted “not THIS !”
From observation, I dont think he is atypical of the other KPFK people I have met at station [volunteering] too. There surely are many other varied listeners who can ‘tolerate’ anything but the same old same old usual limited views expressed.
I appreciate your revealing and presenting a mirror of sorts to confront what the “left” that is not liberal at all or open-minded is doing – same as they accuse “others” of being, while denying their own limitations.
thanks Sonali
good work !

This was absolutely fascinating. I love that you are not afraid to take opinions that may be unpopular, even with your own crowd, Sonali! That said, I had no idea Richard Faulk was a “truther” either. You really should have him back on the show and discuss! 🙂
It’s telling that Mr. Kay chooses to highlight Alex Jones as the leader of the truth movement when in reality Jones is one of many entertaining hucksters to use the 9/11 event to further
there bandwidth ( I like Jones but I can’t listen to him because of all the craziness). I would like to see Kay address the evidence presented by the likes of Stephen Jones (no relation), Niels Harrit, Richard Gage and Kevin Ryan who have proven beyond a shadow of a doubt the all three bldgs ( WTC 1, 2 and 7 ) were brought down by an exotic substance named Nano-Thermite.
This team has found not only the evidence of Nano-Thermite
use at Ground Zero that day but have actually found samples of
unreacted Nano-Thermite. So much for Mr. Kay’s theory
about a “Super Competence” needed to pull off something like 9/11 and not get caught. Guess what? They got caught.
Who is the top name among the endorsers of this person’s book (on the Amazon website)? None other than Daniel Pipes, one of the most right-wing of Bush’s neo-cons. Nuff said.
Sonali
The interview with J. Kay eas very interesting. I can see that he either didn’t research 911 thoroughly or chose to ignore facts like the 911 Commision did choose. Kay’s reduction of all ” Truthers” to” America haters” is intelectually inept. His reduction of all Truthers to beleivers in the same small evil cadre is also disengenuous or another example of insufficient research. When he spoke of a Christian Hoax about end of the world stuff I thought “well a hoax in that way would be a conspiracy and not the perpetuation of a twisted belief”. His cool assuredness of his own infallibility sounds like what he appears to be stuggling against: idealogical extremism.
Thank you for your time
Mark Wallace
What a load of crap, Sonali; it’s obvious you both went into this with the preconceived idea that all things labeled conspiracy, are bunk and not worth looking into.
I have a theory: Americans are educated to swallow any crap the authorities feed them. It takes a departure from our authoritarian educational system to develop an ability to “think outside the box”. Although I did get some very good guidance in abstract concepts from a Professor Schultz, at UC Berkeley in the early 80’s, his curricula seems to be the exception as I find many well educated people who refuse to think . Please, open your eyes & your mind.
Or, perhaps it’s just a complete lack of understanding of the laws of physics; how can a building damaged in a few upper floors collapse completely into its own footprint through the path of least resistance- the rest of the building below it- in little more than the time it would take a bowling ball to fall if dropped from the same height? Of course, the pancake theory. Now there is a theory one can put their faith in. Sit on it; see if it hatches.
It seems like there is too much emphasis on truth and not enough on fact. Structural engineers and physicists have pointed out that it’s physically impossible for steel and concrete building to burn down to the ground as a result of being hit by airplanes. Even if there was an infinite supply of fuel, a steel framed building will not come down because an open air fire can not get hot enough to melt steel.
The focus should be on facts such as these and not on the distraction of marginalized paranoid people. If conspiracy theorists are as pathetic and friendless as Mr. Kay makes them out to be, then they don’t deserve any attention, if anything they should get the kind of sympathy that is usually reserved for the mentally ill.
I’ll be the first to admit that I find some conspiracy theories to be outlandish and silly, but I can use my own common sense to determine what I believe in. On the other hand, automatically dismissing all criticism of the official story seems naive at best, and intolerant of any kind of thinking at worst.
The truth is we don’t know all the facts of what happened on that terrible September day, the official story is full of holes, and as of now the willingness to get to the bottom of what happened is just not there among most Americans. The truth may be too heartbreaking.
I think it is a good thing that Mr. Kay’s point of view was heard on this issue…FOR A WHOLE HOUR. What I don’t think is a good thing is that there was no opposing viewpoint. Now I expect Uprising to present a full hour unopposed interview with Richard Gage, Kevin Ryan, David Ray Griffin, or many others who know much more about 9/11 than Mr. Kay does.
To attempt a full refutation of Mr. Kay’s interview would be beyond the scope of any submitted comment. But suffice it to say that virtually every single statement made by Mr. Kay can be (and has been) easily refuted. For those with enough of an open mind to do so, simply check out the writings and websites of the three names mentioned above.
So I will offer a single observation that captures the essence of what is wrong with Mr. Kay’s arguments. He made a statement (can’t quote directly) about how conspiracy theorists are always nit-picking over details that appear to contradict the main theme of the “official story”. He then argued that somehow these details are being fraudulently used undermine the whole story in spite of the overwhelming evidence in support of it.
At the risk of sounding sarcastic, might I point out that any true explanation of any crime is really a generalized synthesis based on an analysis of the details? When other details are discovered, they must be taken into account, especially if they are directly relevant to the main theory being presented, and the more so if they are systematically suppressed or ignored.
Troy Anthony Davis is on death row for a murder that most Pacifica listeners believe he did not commit. The reason is because of the minor detail that several of the prosecution’s witnesses have claimed that their testimony was coerced, and they have since recanted their testimony. If one relied on Mr. Kay’s logic, these people could now be dismissed as conspiracy theorists who are stirring up details to undermine a proven case. I very much doubt that many KPFK listeners would agree.
Where 9/11 is concerned, Mr. Kay implies that there are a few rogue details that are nothing more than the proverbial molehill that Truthers are making a mountain of. It is quite the reverse: There is an absolute mountain of enormously relevant (but suppressed) details that the 9/11 Commission made a molehill of. You know, minor things like the laws of physics. The Commission did not refute contradictory evidence; they ignored it.
So to all those who have not yet been “inoculated” by Mr. Kay’s interview (his word), I offer the following definition of Mr. Kay’s favorite term, conspiracy theory, which he used incessantly during the interview:
Conspiracy Theory:
A meaningless pejorative expression consisting of the juxtaposition of two words meant to convey the impression that the holder of such ideas is in some way not quite right in the head. Generally applied to information derived from investigations in which the information is inconsistent with official dogma and orthodoxy. Used only by those who do not know the meaning of either word…
..and by those who wish to propagandize them.

In listening to(Lingam) Uprising Radio , as I like to call it,
I am surprised at the distinct contrast between it and the
show that precedes it on KPFA; like day and night.
Today’s uprising highlighted Tel Aviv’s ongoing concern with
so-called “conspiracy theories” being believed by ever
increasing amounts of people in America,- chief financial backer
of the Israel thing, -and the world. This concern was
strongly noted by the AFL back in 2003.
Jonathan Kay says the purpose of his book is to inoculate
people against such theories.
In a quick internet search for info about this author I saw he
was “moderator” recently for a new Orwellian named group
ACL, kicked off in Canada with bigwigs flying in from Israel for
the occasion; the ACL’s purpose is to suppress criticism of Israel on
College Campuses. Presumably, “inoculating” people against
“conspiracy theories” would serve this ACL-ADL agenda.

I think it is getting pretty obvious that at first they ignore you and then they fight you. The conspiracy theory theorists are being dispatched at an accellerating rate now. They have no real arguments, they just want to typecast and make fun of, and jeer at those who actually think for themselves. It is those who question this utterly corrupt government who are the skeptics not these bullies. They are trying to turn things around as if it is we who are the followers. The perpetrators are getting desperate, because they can’t hide the truth anymore, only muddy the waters and try to intimidate.
I have an idea, instead of having a guest that paints with a broad brush anyone who dares to question, why not have an actual proponent of the going accepted theory of 911 or which ever theory you want to discuss? Do any of them have the guts to actually defend that theory?
By the way, I am a woman.

Upon first glance, this website looks to be very “Power of The People” type operation, but very soon it is apparent it is no better than any other Zionist MSM propaganda site. Spending an entire hour to trying to make people demanding a ‘Real’ investigation into 911 look like kooks speaks volumes about “Uprising radio”. The ‘slam dunk’ is it’s Tel-Aviv concerns. Some uprising!!!
Jonathan Kay sounds very even keel, but he’s very suspicious to me.
Vaccines don’t cause autism? Genes cause autism? Where were those genes 50 years ago?
I agree in the truther movement there are many strange characters. However do you subscribe to the endless coincidence theory?
In investigations the first question to ask is “who loses, who gains” or “follow the money”
so who gains? haiberton, kbr, and a few more.
which commission made the omission?
As one of those crazy, hippy Truthers, I was surprised to hear Sonali and Uprising allow such a patronizing and comtemptuous depiction of what I and millions of other people believe.
Mr. Kay is a useful idiot for the project of oligarchy and empire, and, as such, he will prosper. His opinions have been and will be heard daily on the corporate media. His views are well represented; other not so much.
If I want to hear the kind of drivel Mr. Kay propounds, I can just go to the New York Times. Is it the function of KPFA to insult supporters such as me?
We will never see the day that intellectual cowards like Johnathan Kay, his academic impersenator Mark Fenster, or the hosts of these travesties of journalistic integrity actually participate in any open public debate. Griffin and the rest remain ready for public debate on these issues, but these pompus asses hide behind shows where hosts are just pathetic prompters and nothing approaching a challenge is presented. Nor is there one word of the main actual debates on the empirical evidence surrounding 9/11. Oh wait a minute, referring to the empirical facts is just a sort of trickery for us to short cut our responsibility of explaining exactly what happened according to Kay. What a freaking farse.
For our friends at KPFK- I imagine KPFK is much like our KPFA up here in Norcal where here has been”zero” discussion of 9//1 within the main programming community. Yes there are a couple of independent programmers, but the inside group at KPFA tolerates no discussion and will not repond to e-mails from listeners on the subject. Given the mindless status quo loving nature of the host of this show it looks like things are pretty much the same at KPFK. Bummer but not surprising
I guess Mr. Kay wasn’t paying attention during the investigations into Iran Contra and would label Sen. Inouye a “conspiracy theorist:
I would suggest that since Ms. Kolhatkar seems to be interested in psychology and its relationship to world events, that she have Laurie Manwell on her show to discuss denial, especially as it relates to understanding the events of September 11, 2001.
The truth shall set us free. Love is the only way forward.
Apparently, one is not permitted to embed video here, so here is the link to the video of Sen. Inouye talking about the “shadow government” that was involved with Iran Contra:
http://youtu.be/EbFphX5zb8w
The truth shall set us free. Love is the only way forward.
If Ms. Kolhatkar would like to speak with a prominent female professional scientist who clearly questions the destruction of the three WTC buildings on September 11, I suggest she contact Dr. Lynn Margulis. Here are some of her thoughts on the subject:
http://youtu.be/O0fkDmi78Og
Ms. Kolhatkar, please do due diligence on this subject, or you will risk alienating a large and growing part of your audience.
Finally, Mr. Kay is clearly a conspiracy theorist as he subscribes to the U.S. government’s 9/11 conspiracy theory, which is clearly and demonstrably wrong in hundreds of ways.
The truth shall set us free. Love is the only way forward.
The government always charges people with ‘conspiracy’.
What is wrong with the TRUTH ?
I now understand S.K. to be a zionist; likely based on an anti Pakistan outlook, quite disgusting.
Conspiracies are very common throughout history, most commonly in assassinations (J. Caesar, etc.).
I just heard the interview on KPFT in Houston tonight. First, there is no sense in noting Mr. Kay’s political leanings. They are right wing as others have noted. Second, I would like it to be known that steel glows cherry red at 1600 degrees and loses much of its strength. Lastly, I would have prefered that Ms. Kolhatkar’s interview would have went into left wing conspiracy theorys. Ones that are promoted by those that read Chomsky and Zinn (Kay mentioned their names twice). I have heard Mr. Kay all over the radio talk circuit and no one challanges him. After all, conspiracy is a concept of law. People do get together to do harm to others. In many cases it is what Michael Parenti refers to as an “Institutional Actuality”. For example, goverments do plan for mass incarseration during times of civil unrest. The Republican Convention in NY city comes to mind.

Conspiracy Theory
by Paul Craig Roberts
June 20, 2011
While we were not watching, conspiracy theory has undergone Orwellian redefinition.
A “conspiracy theory” no longer means an event explained by a conspiracy. Instead, it now means any explanation, or even a fact, that is out of step with the government’s explanation and that of its media pimps.
For example, online news broadcasts of RT have been equated with conspiracy theories by the New York Times simply because RT reports news and opinions that the New York Times does not report and the US government does not endorse.
In other words, as truth becomes uncomfortable for government and its Ministry of Propaganda, truth is redefined as conspiracy theory, by which is meant an absurd and laughable explanation that we should ignore.
When piles of carefully researched books, released government documents, and testimony of eye witnesses made it clear that Oswald was not President John F. Kennedy’s assassin, the voluminous research, government documents, and verified testimony was dismissed as “conspiracy theory.”
In other words, the truth of the event was unacceptable to the authorities and to the Ministry of Propaganda that represents the interests of authorities.
The purest example of how Americans are shielded from truth is the media’s (including many Internet sites’) response to the large number of professionals who find the official explanation of September 11, 2001, inconsistent with everything they, as experts, know about physics, chemistry, structural engineering, architecture, fires, structural damage, the piloting of airplanes, the security procedures of the United States, NORAD’s capabilities, air traffic control, airport security, and other matters. These experts, numbering in the thousands, have been shouted down by know-nothings in the media who brand the experts as “conspiracy theorists.”
This despite the fact that the official explanation endorsed by the official media is the most extravagant conspiracy theory in human history.
Let’s take a minute to re-acquaint ourselves with the official explanation, which is not regarded as a conspiracy theory despite the fact that it comprises an amazing conspiracy. The official truth is that a handful of young Muslim Arabs who could not fly airplanes, mainly Saudi Arabians who came neither from Iraq nor from Afghanistan, outwitted not only the CIA and the FBI, but also all 16 US intelligence agencies and all intelligence agencies of US allies including Israel’s Mossad, which is believed to have penetrated every terrorist organization and which carries out assassinations of those whom Mossad marks as terrorists.
In addition to outwitting every intelligence agency of the United States and its allies, the handful of young Saudi Arabians outwitted the National Security Council, the State Department, NORAD, airport security four times in the same hour on the same morning, air traffic control, caused the US Air Force to be unable to launch interceptor aircraft, and caused three well-built steel-structured buildings, including one not hit by an airplane, to fail suddenly in a few seconds as a result of limited structural damage and small, short-lived, low-temperature fires that burned on a few floors.
The Saudi terrorists were even able to confound the laws of physics and cause WTC building seven to collapse at free fall speed for several seconds, a physical impossibility in the absence of explosives used in controlled demolition.
The story that the government and the media have told us amounts to a gigantic conspiracy, really a script for a James Bond film. Yet, anyone who doubts this improbable conspiracy theory is defined into irrelevance by the obedient media.
Anyone who believes an architect, structural engineer, or demolition expert who says that the videos show that the buildings are blowing up, not falling down, anyone who believes a Ph.D. physicist who says that the official explanation is inconsistent with known laws of physics, anyone who believes expert pilots who testify that non-pilots or poorly-qualified pilots cannot fly airplanes in such maneuvers, anyone who believes the 100 or more first responders who testify that they not only heard explosions in the towers but personally experienced explosions, anyone who believes University of Copenhagen nano-chemist Niels Harrit who reports finding unreacted nano-thermite in dust samples from the WTC towers, anyone who is convinced by experts instead of by propaganda is dismissed as a kook.
In America today, and increasingly throughout the Western world, actual facts and true explanations have been relegated to the realm of kookiness. Only people who believe lies are socially approved and accepted as patriotic citizens.
Indeed, a writer or newscaster is not even permitted to report the findings of 9/11 skeptics. In other words, simply to report Professor Harrit’s findings now means that you endorse them or agree with them. Everyone in the US print and TV media knows that he/she will be instantly fired if they report Harrit’s findings, even with a laugh. Thus, although Harrit has reported his findings on European television and has lectured widely on his findings in Canadian universities, the fact that he and the international scientific research team that he led found unreacted nano-thermite in the WTC dust and have offered samples to other scientists to examine has to my knowledge never been reported in the American media.
Even Internet sites on which I am among the readers’ favorites will not allow me to report on Harrit’s findings.
As I reported earlier, I myself had experience with a Huffington Post reporter who was keen to interview a Reagan presidential appointee who was in disagreement with the Republican wars in the Middle East. After he published the interview that I provided at his request, he was terrified to learn that I had reported findings of 9/11 investigators.
To protect his career, he quickly inserted on the online interview that my views on the Iraq and Afghanistan invasions could be dismissed as I had reported unacceptable findings about 9/11.
The unwillingness or inability to entertain any view of 9/11 different from the official view dooms to impotence many Internet sites that are opposed to the wars and to the rise of the domestic US police state. These sites, for whatever the reasons, accept the government’s explanation of 9/11; yet, they try to oppose the “war on terror” and the police state which are the consequences of accepting the government’s explanation. Trying to oppose the consequences of an event whose explanation you accept is an impossible task.
If you believe that America was attacked by Muslim terrorists and is susceptible to future attacks, then a “war on terror” and a domestic police state to root out terrorists become necessary to make Americans safe. The idea that a domestic police state and open-ended war might be more dangerous threats to Americans than terrorists is an impermissible thought.
A country whose population has been trained to accept the government’s word and to shun those who question it is a country without liberty in its future.

John F Kennedy described it like this. “We are opposed, around the world, by a monolithic and ruthless conspiracy that relies primarily on covert means for expanding its sphere of influence, on infiltration instead of invasion, on subversion instead of elections, on intimidation instead of free choice. It is a system which has conscripted vast human and material resources into the building of a tightly knit and highly efficient machine that combines military, diplomatic, intelligence, economic, scientific and political operations. Its preparations are concealed not published, its mistakes are buried not headlined, its’ dissenters are silenced not praised. No expenditure is questioned, no secret is revealed.”
Later when trying to conduct an investigation into the Kennedy Assassination, the Director of the FBI, J Edgar Hoover echoed Kennedy’s sentiments when he said. “The individual is handicapped by coming face to face with a conspiracy so monstrous he cannot believe it exists.”
As George Carlin once said, “To not believe in conspiracies means you don’t believe two people have ever sat down and plotted to take advantage of others in some unethical and deceptive way. Well gee, that describes virtually every board meeting of every large corporation in the world! Conspiracies are not just commonplace; they’re practically synonymous with modern-day capitalism!”
Anything in there about the physics of skyscrapers? How many tons of steel and tons of concrete were on each and every level of the towers? Didn’t that have to be determined back in the 60s for the towers to hold themselves up?
Where have the physicists been asking about that for the last NINE YEARS?

Forgive the lateness of this comment. I have been having computer problems. I agree with the numerous replies which took exception to Mr. Kay’s trashing of anyone whom he has convicted as a “truther” i.e. that they are nutters. The one thing that just jumped out at me was his connecting Noam Chomsky to conspiracy theorist. But that this was true, but as anyone who has read or heard Chomsky knows he wants in no way to be connected with anyone who raises any questions about the murders of the Kennedys and Doctor King. The one comment I heard Chomsky make about JFK’s murder was that it was of no importance with respect the war in SouthEast Asia (Vietnam). That denial of reality still just leaves me speechless. He can see nothing wrong with the offical story of 911-three buildings just imploded only two of which was struck by aircraft. Nor does he question the non responce of the North American Air Defense Command. So while I can find nothing but cowardess in Chomsky’s running from these issues. I also find Mr. Kay’s association of Chomsky to people like myself who do ask such question even more dishonnest. It is equally dishonnest to connect all those whom dare question the offical stories to people like Alex Jones.
I have come to conclude that groups of nutters like Alex Jones and David Icke(?) are promoted so they can be used to smear “Conspiracy Therorist” as “Buffs” . The odd thing is that you can listen to, for example, David Icke and say “this guy sounds alot like Noam Chomsky in his analysis of the way of the world”. Then he hit you with the true source of all evil is extraterristial alien reptiles which masquerade in their human suits as the british royal family. The people he identifies as “the reptiles” just happens to be the same folks the Lyndon La Roach and John Birch Society identifed as the internation jewish conspiracy. Same crap new box.
I admit I don’t listen to much right-wing talk radio or to Fox News. So I don’t know if they slime people with creeps like Jones or Icke, but I do know that the liberal/corporate mainstream/and left media do slime people who ask questions about the major assassinations of the 1960’s, The October Surprises of the 1980’s, Government involvment in Drug and Gun Operations, and September 11 with these creeps.
In fact it is just S.O.P. Just listen to Ian Masters slam the left wing commie nuts. Also watch Thom Hartmann shut down anyone one who ask about Chemtails, or dare question any theory other than his. That the mafia, and only the mafia, killed JFK. In the case of the one female caller who tried to discuss chemtrails he immidately slimed her as a believer in reptile-people. She had made no comment about reptile-people, and if she did hear this comment was very likely totally baffled by this sliming or totally unaware of what Hartmann was talking about. How sad is the establishment left even for all the good that it does do in telling us so much valuable information and news.
I cling on to listening to the rumor speak about receiving free online grant applications so I have been looking around for the best site to get one. Could you advise me please, where could i acquire some?
