Eyewitness to Genocide: Darfur

Brian SteidleGUEST: Former Marine Captain Brian Steidle, the U.S. representative to the African Union’s peacekeeping mission in Darfur, Sudan

600 Nigerian troops are being airlifted to Darfur, Sudan, to bolster peace keeping operations. The move is part of the growing international pressure to help end the deadly conflicts that has claimed over 200,000 lives in the region. Meanwhile, UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, has asked the United States to provide air support for the several thousand African Union peacekeeping troops that are already there. Members of the Bush administration have openly admitted that the civilian killing in Darfur amounts to a genocide. To date, the US has done little in practical terms to stop it. Meanwhile Darfur has all but dropped out of the sights of the news media.

My guest today is Brian Steidle, a former Marine captain, who went to Darfur in September 2004 as one of three U.S. military representatives to the African Union’s peacekeeping mission. His role was to report violations of a cease-fire between the Arab militia and African tribes that had been declared in April 2003.

Brian Steidle will be speaking on March 3, 9pm at Temple Emanuel, 8844 Burton Way, Beverly Hills.

Pres. Bush is immoral for effectively ignoring Darfur; his failure to prior-itize stopping genocide there by mobilizing NATO to intervene — which might get Sudan’s govt to back down w/o any intervention– will not be forgotten. He’s into defanging criticism, not saving lives. So more women are raped & men castrated as Bush plays word games. 400,000 are already dead, more slaugher impends, w/o Bush prioritization of this issue!
