New Jersey Moves to Ban Death Penalty

| the entire program

death penaltyGUEST: Lance Lindsey, Executive Director of Death Penalty Focus

Last week, the New Jersey State legislature voted to pave the way for the state to become the first in four decades to repeal the death penalty. Governor John Corzine, long in favor of abolishing capital punishment, is expected in to sign into law the replacement of the death sentence with life without parole next month. Opponents of capital punishment view the recent vote as just the latest indicator that the US public is beginning to turn away from death penalty. As the number of death sentences and executions continue to reduce nationwide, anti-death penalty activists hope that other states follow New Jersey’s suit. Currently, thirty-six states make use of the death penalty as a form of punishment. Activists are quick to caution that a nationwide ban is not foreseeable in the immediate future.

We are treating the prisoners too well. The prisoners get fed 3 times a day with a complete meal. They get visitors, time to play outside, a roof over their head, paper to write on and showers with soap. The prisoners are treated like a retired person. Why do the get to live better then some hardworking Americans? How are they learning their lesson if they do not really get punished? The death penalty pension is an appropriate punishment for murderers. They took away a life so they should get theirs taken away too. We keep building many new prisons because they are getting too full, why don’t we get rid of the criminals that don’t value a person’s life? When you commit a felony, it is a matter of free will your not forced to do bad things. No one is compelled to commit robbery, murder, or rape. The average citizen does not have a mind or intentions to become a killer.
We waste our money on prisoners. Those prisoners do not always deserve to live. What we do not realize is these prisoners did many crimes like, rape, murder and molestation. And all we do is put them in a place where they are pretty much being taken care of. The prisoners are being fed, clothed and sheltered. Kids in Africa could use those things more then them, they do not deserve it. Think about it, we take care of the bad people in this world but just let the innocent starve and die. The money the prisoners receive could feed the hungry in Africa, orphanages and many places where kids and family are suffering.
If we enforced the death penalty many people will be too scared to commit a crime like murder. If we enforce the death penalty and people see were serious about it the crime rate will go down. Because they know if they get caught they will die. Once the crime rate goes down we can spend the money on better things.
