Obama and Huckabee Win Iowa Caucus

Illinois Senator Barack Obama and former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee won victories in Iowa’s Republican and Democratic caucuses on Thursday night. Obama defeated Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton and former Senator John Edwards by a substantial margin. However, Clinton is leading other Democrats in nationwide polls by a wide margin. Among Republicans, despite having vastly better funding, former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney lost to Huckabee by more than ten percentage points. However, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who bypassed Iowa to concentrate on other states, still enjoys a lead over other Republican contenders nationally. The nominating calendar has been greatly compressed this year, with 31 states voting on or before February 5th, starting with the state of Iowa. This year candidates spent tens of millions of dollars on campaign ads and hiring hundreds of paid staff in Iowa, believing that a win will catapult them to the nomination. The Iowa caucus is the first major electoral event in the Presidential elections and can be an early indication of which candidates for President might win the nomination of their political party at its national convention. The New Hampshire primary election takes place just five days after Iowa.

How Progressives Can Win Elections

Polls consistently show that most Americans espouse progressive values such as affordable healthcare for all, curbing global warming, protecting abortion rights, stricter gun control, etc. As this year’s Presidential election battles start heating up, the question arises, “so why is it so hard for progressive candidates to win elections?” My next guest, veteran political consultant Bernie Horn, says it’s because progressives don’t know how to explain their ideas effectively, beyond speaking to the choir. He says progressives can win elections if they “Frame the Future.” And in fact, they have won elections, even in conservative states such as Montana, Arizona, and Florida.

Guiness World Records Rewrites History

GUEST: Ramona Africa, Minister of Information for MOVE organization

Page 123 of the 2008 Guiness Book of World Records lists the 1985 bombing of the MOVE organization in Philadelphia as the sixth most deadly mass suicide in recent history. The entry is listed under the section, “Mass Suicides” (additionally MOVE is listed as a cult under the section, “Cults, Fans and Followers”). However, according to most credible historical accounts, the fire bombing of a residence that housed several members of MOVE more than 22 years ago was initiated by the Philadelphia Police. Five adults and six children were killed and, despite two grand jury investigations and a commission which found that top city officials were negligent, no one from the city was charged with any crimes. The only adult survivor of the bombing, Ramona Africa, served seven years in prison on a riot charge. She was eventually awarded $500,000 for pain and suffering, and for disfigurement. Today Ramona is MOVE’s Minister of Information. She has started a vigorous campaign calling on the Guiness Book of World Records to correct the information in their latest edition.
