Bush in middle eastGUEST: Ervand Abrahamian, Professor of History at City University of New York, author of several books including “Iran Between Two Revolutions”

On Wednesday, President Bush began a week-long trip to the Middle East to address the Israeli– Palestine conflict and Iran. Bush has declared that a peace treaty between Israel and the Palestinian Territories would be signed before the end of his presidential term. While he called on Israel to end the occupation during his trip, many Palestinians are doubtful that he will do much about the ever-expanding Israeli settlements and the restrictions on Palestinians’ movement. During Bush’s visit to the West Bank city of Ramallah yesterday, there was a strict lockdown that included curfews and a ban on public protests. During the earlier part of his trip Bush presented his other focus this week: Iran. He characterized Iran as a “threat to world peace,” and called Iranian actions in the recent alleged Persian Gulf naval incident involving Iranian and U.S. vessels a “very dangerous gesture.” Now in Kuwait, Bush is expected to round out the rest of his Middle East trip by visiting several other Gulf states as well as Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and the United Arab Emirates The president plans to persuade Arab nations to join the U.S. and Israel in containing Iran’s influence in the region.
