Philip AgeeGUEST: ex-CIA agent Philip Agee, author of the book “Inside the Company: CIA Diary”

Ex-CIA undercover officer, Philip Agee, famous for turning on his organization and exposing it in a book, died last week. He was 72 and living in Cuba. Agee revealed the inner workings of the CIA and the identities of perhaps hundreds of undercover CIA agents. Prompted in large part by Agee’s book, “Inside the Company: CIA Diary,” the US Congress in 1982 passed the Intelligence Identities Protection Act, making it illegal to knowingly divulge the identities of covert CIA officers. According to Agee, the CIA was interested only in propping up decaying dictatorships and thwarting economic reforms. He was essentially exiled from the US when the then Secretary of State denied him a passport in 1979. The US media coverage of his death has included labels like “rogue spy,” “whistle-blower,” “turn-coat,” and even “traitor.”

Philip Agee was interviewed in 1974 on KPFK on the program “What in the World” with Tim McGovern, Barbara Cady and Earl Ofari Hutchinson.
