Congress could consider a bill to institute American Religious History Week as early as next week. House resolution 888 was introduced by Representative J. Randy Forbes, the founder of the Congressional Prayer Caucus. According to Forbes, the annual week would be an important counter to what he sees as efforts to remove all religious reference from political discourse. But what is frightening about the proposed bill is its lengthy set of preambles include numerous references to the United States as a ‘Christian nation,’ and Americans as ‘a Christian people,’ and ‘a religious people whose institutions presuppose a Supreme Being.’ Award winning author Chris Hedges calls the bill ‘an insidious attempt by the radical Christian right to rewrite American history.’
