A little reported story around Super Tuesday’s elections was the set of voting irregularities reported all across California, but particularly in Los Angeles. Most notably, voting machines failed to be delivered to polling sites across LA County until a little after 12 noon on Tuesday, five hours after the polls opened. Internet bloggers began breaking the stories, which were eventually picked up by the Los Angeles Times and the San Francisco Chronicle. One common complaint was about poll workers not being aware that this year unaffiliated voters could vote in the Democratic primary (but not the Republican). Secretary of State Debra Bowen was forced to issue a reminder to poll workers. Some progressive organizations and supporters of Democratic candidate Barack Obama, are preparing to mount a legal challenge to what they say were confusing voting procedures and ballot designs in LA County that could disenfranchise the estimated 776,000 unaffiliated voters here. Adding to the mess was the return of some counties to paper ballots. Tuesday’s large turnout resulted in some polling places running out of paper ballots, as well as provisional ballots.
