‘Move To Amend’ Seeks An End To Corporate Personhood
The 12-member Congressional deficit reduction committee held its third meeting yesterday, a closed-door power breakfast in DC. The so-called Super Committee’s first two meetings were open to the public, and the Sunlight Foundation Reporting Group wrote about who was in attendance. Not surprisingly, lobbyists got front row seats to one of the biggest shows in town. The Foundation also discovered many didn’t even have to wait in line. About two dozen companies offer line-standing services, a person for hire who does the boring work of waiting in line themselves for hours before the doors open. However lobbying is not a spectator sport, and the Sunlight Foundation is also reporting on the fundraisers that Super Committee members are holding while they also search for cuts to the deficit totaling at least $1.2 trillion by Thanksgiving. On Wednesday Republican Senator John Johnson of Wisconsin held a dinner at $500 a plate for individuals, and $1000 for Political Action Committees. Democrat Congressman Jim Clyburn planned to headline a breakfast earlier this morning with entry tickets topping off at a $5000 for a “Host” level donation. Meanwhile, one national coalition is hard a work to close the flood-gates to corporate money opened by the Supreme Court and its 2010 ruling in the Citizens United case. The organizations and individuals behind Move To Amend argue that the only remedy to the effects of the Citizen’s United decision is a Constitutional Amendment, to eliminate corporate personhood. David Cobb, former Green Party candidate for President and a spokesman for Move To Amend will be speaking in Whittier tonight, Santa Monica tomorrow, and a few more Southern California locations into next week.
