Is McCain Fit to Be President?
| the entire program
GUEST: Eric Bohlert, Senior Fellow at Media Matters
Speaking to journalists in Britain, presidential hopeful John McCain claimed he “misspoke,” when he made comments about Al Qaeda training in Iran. Addressing the repeated statements made last week in Amman, Jordan, the senator said, “Just as Senator Obama said he was looking forward to meeting the president of Canada, we all misspeak from time to time.” Senator Joseph Lieberman stepped in to correct his fellow senator at the press conference in question after the second time McCain claimed Iran was training al-Qaeda within its borders. Iranians are majority Shia, while Al Qaeda is a Sunni organization. The presumptive Republican presidential nominee then went on to say, “I’m sorry, the Iranians are training extremists, not al-Qaeda.” However, McCain, who prides himself on his foreign policy experience, made similar assertions without corrections just a day before the March 18th Jordanian press conference. During an interview with radio host Hugh Hewitt, the Arizona senator made the same claim.
