Catholic Diocese Takes Stand on Immigration
GUEST: Kevin Appelby, Director of Migration and Refugee Policy at the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops
Cardinal Roger Mahony announced earlier this month that the Los Angeles Catholic Archdiocese would defy anti-immigrant legislation currently passing through Congress. In particular, it would ignore a proposed federal law requiring churches to ask immigrants for residency documents before administering help. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa agreed, saying: “I can tell you that the cardinal… is right in saying that the church should not be in the business of enforcing our immigration laws.” The proposed law is House Resolution 4437 or the “Border Protection, Antiterrorism and Illegal Immigration Control Act of 2005” sponsored by Republican Congressman, James Sensenbrenner. In cities across the country, immigrant advocates are protesting the bill. On Friday March 10th, 100,000 people marched in Chicago against the Sensenbrenner bill and the Minute man project. Next Saturday March 25th, there will be a large pro-immigrant march here in Southern California.
