Frida Kahlo: A Deeper Look
| the entire program
GUEST: Gregorio Luke, International Lecturer, Former Director of the Museum of Latin American Art
Centennial celebrations continue in commemorating one hundred years since Mexican painter Frida Kahlo’s birth. Major exhibitions on Kahlo’s art and life, such as the recent opening at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, show no signs of waning interest. Locally, Gregorio Luke, the former director of the Museum of Latin American Art in Long Beach, will be presenting a multimedia lecture on Frida Kahlo’s life this week. Going beyond the well-known perspectives of Frida the artist, Luke will incorporate recently published personal letters and diary entries to offer a more comprehensive perspective. The wife of renowned Mexican muralist Diego Rivera, Kahlo was an avowed communist through her adult life, but as Luke’s presentation will reveal, she knew how to make statements in more than one way. By analyzing her wardrobe, Luke will draw upon the publication “El Ropero de Frida,” to suggest that Kahlo even used her clothing style to make a cultural statement about indigenous Mexican women.
Gregorio Luke will be giving a lecture on Thursday April 10th at 8 pm at the Carpenter Performing Arts Center at Cal State Long Beach, 6200 Atherton Street, Long Beach CA 90815.
