Occupy Movement Joins Forces For National Day of Action on Foreclosures
Police arrested thirty one people at the Occupy D.C. encampment this past weekend when protesters refused to take down a wooden structure they had erected in McPherson Park. In response, hundreds of clamorous Chicagoans affiliated with Occupy Chicago left for Washington DC yesterday morning targeting the national mall with four days of protest in support of their D.C. colleagues. With the arrests in the nation’s capitol and the raiding of similar campsites in New York, Los Angeles, Portland and Philadelphia, the end of Occupy Wall Street’s physical encampments seem eminent, though the Occupy movement itself is not over. In the past week, the state of Massachusetts has filed a lawsuit against five major banks (including J.P. Morgan Chase, Wells Fargo, and Bank of America) and both Fannie Mae and Freddy Mac have announced that they would freeze foreclosures for two weeks during the holidays. Encouraged by such occurrences, various community organizations throughout the country have joined Occupiers in setting their sights on the nationwide foreclosure crisis under the banner “Occupy Our Homes,” and have called for a National Day of Action today, December 6th. Here in Los Angeles, activities have already begun with a rally that took place yesterday in front of City Hall calling for council members to support the “Responsible Banking Ordinance.” That piece of legislation would enforce the publishing of a bank activity report card for all banks, making it easier to hold them accountable. Community groups like Refund California and ACCE have also taken initiative by coordinating bus trips with protestors to foreclosed homes in order to occupy them. Arturo D., a veteran of the Armed Forces, and Ana Casas Wilson, court interpreter and disability advocate, are both residents of Los Angeles facing foreclosure of their homes. Both will join Occupy Our Homes protestors in setting up around the clock encampments at their respective house and demand that banks allow a proper revision of their loan modification.
GUESTS: Peggy Mears, Community Organizer with ACCE – Alliance of Californians for Community Empowerment, Ana Casas Wilson, a disability advocate with cerebral palsy, fighting cancer, and facing foreclosure from Wells Fargo
