Senate Approves Arctic Drilling
GUEST: Karen Wayland, Legislative Director with the Natural Resources Defence Council (NRDC)
As part of the 2007 federal budget, the US Senate just voted 51-49 to allow oil drilling in Alaska’s Artic National Wildlife Refuge. By attaching the drilling measure to the budget resolution, Senate leaders hope to avoid a filibuster. However, such a political tactic has been tried before. An artic drilling provision was forced out of a 2006 budget-cutting measure. As the 2007 budget resolution moves to the house, it may suffer the same fate as many house members face re-election.

America is too dependant on importing oil from foreign countries. Opening ANWR will grant the US the ability to produce energy domestically while creating many jobs and other benefits nationwide.
