Will a Nominee Emerge This Week?

GUEST: Katrina Vanden Heuvel, editor of the Nation Magazine
Yesterday’s primary election in Puerto Rico yielded a solid win for Senator Hillary Clinton who is still hanging on in a bid to become the Democratic Party nominee. Clinton won 68% of the vote to Senator Barack Obama’s 32%. Still, Obama leads Clinton in the overall delegate count. With the last two remaining primaries on Tuesday in Montana and South Dakota where Obama is favored, Clinton has launched a last-ditch effort to try to win over undecided superdelegates and even try to convince those committed to Obama to support her instead. Clinton had been lobbying the Democratic National Committee to count her wins in Florida and Michigan, two states that were being penalized for moving their elections too early. The DNC’s rules and bylaws committee decided over the weekend to seat the delegates, but has awarded them half a vote each, leaving Clinton and her supporters disappointed. The total number of delegates now needed to win the nomination is 2,118. According to CNN, Obama is now only 48 delegates away from winning.
