War on Women, Gas Prices, Dominate Public Discourse on Super Tuesday

Republican voters in ten states will choose their party’s nominee for President today, in races that are likely to decide the final outcome. Super-Tuesday races will take place in Alaska, Georgia, Idaho, Massachusetts, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Vermont and Virginia. Former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney currently has the lead in the number of delegates needed to cinch the nomination – according to the Associated Press he has 203 delegates, followed by former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum, with less than half that at 92 delegates. Newt Gingrich comes in third so far with 33 delegates, followed by Ron Paul with 25.
With all ten states on Super Tuesday using a variety of proportional allocation methods to distribute more than 400 delegates, it is less about winning decisively state by state, and more about winning the largest number of delegates overall. If Romney wins enough delegates in several key states such as Ohio, it could ‘seal the deal’ for his candidacy. Santorum’s advocacy against women’s access to contraception has resulted in him losing women voters to Romney even as conservative social icon Rush Limbaugh is facing heat for degrading and misogynist comments made over three days on his show – both Romney and Santorum have distanced themselves from Limbaugh. Campaigning at a factory in Canton, Ohio yesterday, Romney reiterated that the state of the economy is his biggest issue.
Meanwhile, Newt Gingrich, unveiled his plan to bring gas prices down to $2.50 a gallon as President, and hopes to win big in states like Georgia. Ron Paul is also looking to score delegates today, particularly in three states with significant libertarian voter tendencies: Alaska, Idaho, and North Dakota. Just hours before polls close tonight, President Obama will hold a press conference to announce his new mortgage relief plan.
