The great American writer, Mark Twain once said “Civilization is the limitless multiplication of unnecessary necessities.” His observations on the human condition and on the United States persist even today. Born Samuel Langhorn Clemens, Twain went on to write among the best known and loved of American novels: The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, and its sequel, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. He was a grand character whose political views evolved over time to strong positions against US imperialism and war. Twain positioned himself as a staunch abolitionist and supporter of women’s rights. For decades actor Hal Holbrook has performed an award-winning one-man show called Mark Twain Tonight. Now, actor Val Kilmer presents a new take on Mark Twain in his own one-man show that he has written and directed and performs in called Citizen Twain. Kilmer is known for his roles in well known Hollywood productions like Batman Forever, and Top Gun. He performs his play in a limited run at The Historic Masonic Lodge at Hollywood Forever Cemetery over only two weekends this month. Citizen Twain has already been seen in development at the Disney Concert Hall, and Tim Robbins’ The Actors’ Gang. Kilmer will also share a reading from the play at an event this Saturday March 31st called All in for the 99%.

Sonali Kolhatkar spoke with Val Kilmer about his play Citizen Twain at the Masonic Lodge at Hollywood Forever Cemetary while he was getting his make up done to play Mark Twain.
