New FISA Bill Perpetuates a Culture of Control
| the entire program
GUEST: Derrick Jensen, author of several books including “Welcome to the Machine: Science, Surveillance and the Culture of Control”
Returning from the July 4th holiday recess, members of the US Senate are expected to vote tomorrow on the new Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act or FISA. The controversial wiretapping bill passed through the House of Representatives last month with bipartisan revisions and expansions. Civil liberties and privacy activist groups have condemned the legislation for its expansions and criticized the improvements as insignificant. Amendments to the FISA bill would grant retroactive immunity to telecommunication corporations named in lawsuits for providing the government with phone records and other personal information without court orders. The new FISA proposal also carries what some are calling a loophole in advanced judicial approvals of surveillance and has a sunset provision set for December 2012. Both Presidential candidates Senators Barack Obama and John McCain, who, as President would inherit whatever parameters on FISA are agreed upon, are expected to vote for the legislation. Obama’s declared support has become a source of contention among those in his base who feel disappointed by his policy reversal.

This was a GREAT show. At last someone who tells it like it is. We need to hear much more of Jensen. moret
I don’t understand why Derrick Jensen’s voice is so quiet in the so called progressive media. It is always refreshing to hear his perspective. Thank you for having him on your show.
