Sex Positive: The Untold Story of an S&M Hustler Turned Revolutionary AIDS Activist
GUEST: Richard Berkowitz, author of “A Personal History: Staying Alive – the Invention of Safe Sex,” David Oliver Cohen, the producer of Sex Positive
Within the midst of the AIDS epidemic of the 1980s, with large numbers of gay men dying from a new and poorly understood disease, a man by the name of Richard Berkowitz spoke out about the need for practicing safe sex. Today whether you’re straight or gay, we take the concept of safe-sex for granted. But 20 years ago, it was a controversial topic, both inside and outside the gay community. Five years ago Berkowitz told his story in a book called Stayin’ Alive: The Invention of Safe Sex. Today his story has been captured in a new, multiple award winning documentary called Sex Positive, showing at this year’s Outfest.
Sex Positive is screening on Tuesday July 14th at 9:30 pm at the Director’s Guild of America Theater, 7920 Sunset Blvd, Los Angeles. Tickets are available at 213-480-7065, or at boxoffice@outfest.org.

HIV and Aids has no judgement. Isn’t safe sex a choice for all people having sex?Obviously Mr Berkowitz didn’t always practice safe sex. Why are we treating him like a victim. Mr Berkowitz knew an epidemic was coming and no one listened…Thats news to a lot of people including Mr Berkowitz.He also did not invent safe sex but promoted it later on because S and M hustlers don’t usually use their penis etc. during sex sessions…I find this film very jaded and one sided…
