This Sunday will mark the 20th anniversary of the Los Angeles Uprising. Today, we dedicate the hour to a remembrance of the events that began on April 29th 1992, and to a discussion of what has changed, and what has stayed the same, in Los Angeles since then.

Twenty years ago a Simi Valley jury comprised of ten whites, 1 Latino and 1 Asian juror acquitted three Los Angeles police officers of all charges in what became known as the Rodney King case. The acquittals set off 4 days of civil unrest that forever changed the city.

We begin our special program this morning with an exclusive feature from the Pacifica Radio Archives, reaching into their vast collection of audio to bring us Pacifica’s coverage of the 1992 LA Uprising.

Brian De Shazor is the director of the Pacifica Radio Archives and an award winning broadcaster and producer and host of the Pacifica Weekly Series, From the Vault.

A 10 hour CD compilation of Pacifica’s coverage of the 1992 Uprising is available for a $50 pledge to the PRA. Call 1-800-735-0230 or visit www.pacificaradioarchives.org.
