The So-Called “Annexation” of Hawaii by Subversive Historian Gabriel San Roman

Exactly 110 years ago on this day in people’s history, the so-called “annexation” of Hawaii to the United States occurred. On August 12th, 1898, the Hawaiian flag was lowered from the ‘lolani Palace as the U.S. stars and stripes was raised in its place. U.S. sugar plantation owners on the Hawaiian Islands wanted annexation for years so as to not be bothered by tariffs and other practices of economic sovereignty. They had grown so influential that in 1893, U.S. marines landed and overthrew the internationally recognized Kingdom of Hawaii imposing a “provisional government,” that would carry out the annexation five years later. In the book Aloha Betrayed, author Noenoe Silva rediscovered a petition that 95% of native Hawaiians signed on to in 1897 opposing annexation.

To this day, native Hawaiians struggle for self-determination all while tourists flock to the islands just to get “lei’ed.”

Let’s keep it real! For Uprising, this is your truth professa saying it’s no mystery why they conceal our history!
