Award Winning Documentary About Uganda’s LGBT Community Premieres At LA Film Fest
Catholic bishops in Uganda are calling for a revival of the draconian Anti-Homosexuality Bill, informally known as the “Kill the Gays Bill.” The infamous law calls for the execution of anyone found to be homosexual in Uganda. The bill was initially proposed in 2009, but was overturned due to international pressure. However, it may make a re-appearance since the Uganda Joint Christian Council recently agreed that they wanted to revive the bill.
Call Me Kuchu, a documentary that follows the life of David Kato, Uganda’s first openly gay activist, is making its US premiere at the Los Angeles Film Festival this weekend. The film follows David Kato’s fight against Uganda’s homophobic laws and his struggle for the rights of the LGBT community. Call Me Kuchu was filmed when the Anti-Homosexuality Bill was first introduced – a bill that gained steam from newspaper headlines calling for the hanging of photographed gays, and that has been linked to American evangelical organizations. Shortly after a court victory, David Kato was tragically found beaten to death in his home, sparking international attention to Uganda’s systematic homophobia.
Call Me Kuchu explores the triumphs and struggles that a tight knit group of LGBT activists in Uganda face in their day-to-day journey for their rights in a country where 95% of the population apparently condones the criminalization of homosexuality. Released in February of this year, the documentary has already won several awards including the Best Documentary Award at the Berlin Film Festival.
Call Me Kuchu will make its US premiere at the Los Angeles Film Festival this weekend with screenings and a panel discussion with the directors and Ugandan LGBT activists on Saturday and Sunday night at Regal Cinemas L.A. Live.
