Call Me Kuchu, a documentary that follows the life of David Kato, Uganda’s first openly gay activist, is making its US premiere at the Los Angeles Film Festival on June 16-17, 2012. The film follows David Kato’s fight against Uganda’s homophobic laws and his struggle for the rights of the LGBT community. Call Me Kuchu was filmed when the Anti-Homosexuality Bill was first introduced – a bill that gained steam from newspaper headlines calling for the hanging of photographed gays, and that has been linked to American evangelical organizations. Shortly after a court victory, David Kato was tragically found beaten to death in his home, sparking international attention to Uganda’s systematic homophobia.

On June 15th, 2012, Uprising host Sonali Kolhatkar spoke with the film’s director, Katherine Fairfax Wright.
