Subversive Historian – 09/11/08

Eric Drooker
Hudson’s Arrival to Manhattan by Subversive Historian Gabriel San Roman

Four-hundred and ninety-nine years ago on this day in people’s history, English explorer Henry Hudson came ashore on Manhattan Island. Commissioned by the Dutch East India Company in order to find an alternative sea passage to Asia, Hudson happened upon the New York Harbor instead. He also happened upon the indigenous natives who inhabited the lands such as the Mahican peoples of modern day Albany. Nevertheless, as a result of his voyage, the Dutch established claims to the land and settlers began arriving in 1624. The ensuing presence of the Dutch had a profound impact on natives. Smallpox, wars and massacres had ensured that by less than one-hundred years before Hudson’s arrival, The Valley named after him had lost 90% of its indigenous population and those who remained were forced off the land.

It seems Manhattan Island knew tragedy long before September 11th, 2001

For Uprising, this is your truth professa’ saying it’s no mystery why they conceal our history!

You should be grateful for Hudson’s arrival to this land because you cannot speak the way you do any place else on this earth. It seems you know tragedy very well too. What happened to you that has caused you to hate this country so much?

Very hypocritical of you to speak so bad about this country especially on this day. Shame on you. This country is not perfect but if you are this bothered and upset about its history no one is forcing you to stay here. LEAVE!!!

I find it interesting how in your previous comment you questioned my legal status, yet in this entry say nothing to the Dutch making land claims on territories inhabited by indigenous peoples.

Secondly, as the Dutch were mentioned above, that is who I’m talking about. How you draw that into a criticism of the U.S. is baffling.

Lastly, should the Mahican peoples and the Lenapes be grateful? What’s the gratitude based on? Land loss? genocide? Try stepping into someone else’s shoes and viewing history in someone else’s views.
