W.A.C. Iraq…A Work in Progress
| the entire program
A House subcommittee hearing held this Wednesday focused on sexual assault on women in the military. Congresswoman Jane Harman of California, who attended the hearing, wrote in an LA Times opinion piece last spring that “women in the U.S. military are more likely to be raped by a fellow soldier than killed by enemy fire in Iraq.” Criticizing what she deems as an inadequate response by the Department of Defense to this crisis, Harman has also introduced a bill to address the lack of proper investigation and persecution of such sexual assault and rape cases. Meanwhile, as of August 20th of this year, a hundred women have been killed in combat in Iraq. A number of noncombat gunshot fatalities have been reported as suicides, though some critics question the validity of such classifications. These statistics are just a small portion of what many women experience when they enlist. A new play making its world debut at Breath of Fire Theater examines the experiences of the Women’s Army Corps. Written by Mel Nieves and directed by Jose Casas, W.A.C. Iraq – A Work in Progress, opens this weekend.
